The original Speck CandyShell cases were embarrassingly colorful. It really did look like a large M&M candy shell. And I didn’t want to carry one of those around. That was some years back. Speck now has a diversified product line of ordinary looking cases. Strangely though, I find myself attracted to their CandyShell design now when it never interested me in the past. I guess that’s because they stand out. And it is harder to stand out today with the profusion of iPhone case designs that’s both colorful and bizarre. Speck still make a complete line of CandyShell cases in many strange bold colors like pirate’s cove teal or snake bite green or tiger claw orange. The name’s strange but the color’s familiar no worries. The CandyShell case is really 2 case in 1. The inner layer is made from soft rubber while the visible outer layer is polycarbonate plastic. Unfortunately they are molded together so you can’t separate them unlike the Acase Superleggera PRO. On the other hand, all the ports and buttons are directly accessible. Another thing that they got right is the camera opening. It’s large and away from the lens to prevent hazing when using the flash. Refer to my earlier post on this subject. But if you are going to buy a CandyShell case, you gotta to do it because you love the choice of colors. You can find a whole list of Speck CandyShell cases here but my favorite is the Raspberry Truffle White.

Otterbox has always puzzled me. They have a very simple product premise i.e., promising cases that are strong and ruggedized. Their product naming convention regrettably invites head scratching. I find names such as iPhone 4/4S Commuter Series Case, iPhone 4 / 4S Commuter Series Strength Case, iPhone 4/4S Defender Series with Realtree Camo etc. a mouthful to remember for cases that are almost similar in looks and in design principle. They also appear to have a large number of color selection/combination for the same case adding to the confusion of names.

However, much is to be said about Otterbox’s laser like focus on protection. Their cases look strong and better build than your typical case. If protection is you primary reason for purchase then Otterbox offers a wide selection of cases that you would like. I like their recent commuter series case for one more thing, they designed the camera/flash cut-out to prevent reflection from the flash entering the camera spoiling your picture with hazy borders. See previous post on this subject. You can get Otterbox Commuter series case from Amazon at deep discount off Otterbox’s website prices. For larger selection of colors and design, check out this list.

I once had an Incase snap case for my iPhone 4. It came with a feature call flash ring. Which is just a black ring (rubber?) fitted around the hole exposing the camera and flash. I didn’t think at that time that Incase was keeping it real. Later on when I tried a generic snap case (this one made of blue plastic and no flash ring), I realize Incase wasn’t kidding. All pictures taken with flash had a halo of bluish haze around the border. The darker the subject the worse the haze. Apparently, the flash bounces off the rim of the case and reflected into the camera causing all sorts of trouble. I replace the generic case with my Incase and experimented with the same scene and there was no hazing or so little I didn’t notice. Strangely enough, Incase no longer trumpets this feature on its website. Maybe other manufacturers have caught on and it is no longer a competitive advantage. Still credit is to be given where it is due. The classic Incase snap case for iPhone 4/4S available from Amazon in Clear, Clear Frost or Black Frost.

I saw this charger being sold on Amazon at $1.71. A price so cheap it’s ridiculous. I guess the supplier is overstocked big time on this part. What with iPhone 4S on sales and all, an iPhone 4 only charger cannot be flying off the shelf. I’ve never used this particular no name, generic charger before but all I’ve ever used are no name, generic chargers and they all worked fine. So I guess this one is good enough and it might even work for iPhone 3G or 3GS too. If you ever wanted a car charger for your iPhone, grab this now before it’s all gone.

The Acase Superleggera PRO is an interesting concept. Instead of one case, why not offer 2 in 1 purchase. The inner layer of the case is made of silicone while the outer layer is hard case polycarbonate that goes over the silicon layer. Slip one over the other and viola! Double protection. This is novel but its actual utility is somewhat fuzzy.

Much more interesting is that the silicon inner layer comes with dust caps (flaps) for the charging port and the headphone jack. To use them, you need to flip open these flaps. If you work in a dusty environment, you will find this very useful as the headphone jack is known to collect dust/lint that affects performance. Btw, watch this youtube video on how to clean your jack if you are having this problem. On the other hand, if you use the headphone jack a lot like I do and drives around with a car charger always handy, this constant need to open and close the flaps gets old fast. Whether this case is suitable for you or not depends on how you use your phone on a daily basis.

The price, however is right for what’s offered. The Acase(TM) iPhone 4 and 4S Superleggera PRO Dual Layer Protection (Black/Black) case (Fits AT&T, Sprint and Verizon iPhone 4 and 4S) is available from Amazon.com in many different color combinations.

The Incase slider iPhone case is a classic by now and has spawn many imitations. Slider cases offer great protection for your iPhone but at the cost of being a bit bulkier than most. If you are prone to dropping your phone, then this is a reasonable choice to make. When buying sliding cases, I would recommend buying from name brands like Incase as these must be precisely made. I have tried no brand sliding cases and they are either too tight, making taking it on & off difficult or too loose. Although, too tight is my typical experience. Another common problem with slider cases is that it will tend to pull off the screen protector when sliding in the phone. This is made worse if the case is made too tight. I don’t have this problem though as I no longer use a screen protector; figuring that the tough gorilla glass is protection enough. Some people may insist on one for privacy reason or to reduce glare. If so, a sliding case may not be the best solution for you. The Incase iPhone 4 Slider Case – Soft Touch (AT&T & Verizon) (Black) is available from Amazon.

Of all the cases I’ve seen and used, this one elicited the most comments from my friends. The leather feels good and looks genuinely like a book cover. So much so my friends thought I had a small bible with me. Inside is an iPhone case and a wallet compartment, sort of. You won’t be able to put very many things into this. I have at various times; some money, credit cards and transit cards. Convenient but not a true wallet. But very useful for those nights out when you want to carry little in case they get forgotten after a couple of drinks. Nice but somewhat expensive.
